Summary


It is possible to have Cloud Drive Mapper load prior to the desktop. This is particularly useful when you are using folder redirection or Cloud Drive Mapper is running in a VDI environment.



Configuration details



For Cloud Drive Mapper to run prior to desktop we take control of the userinit process during the bootup. To allow this please follow these steps:



  1. Locate the string  Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit and put the value into your clipboard (recommend putting into a notepad as you will need it later)

       a) Reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v userinit
     



        2. Now edit the userinit key as per below adding onto the original value with the changes below


           b )Reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v "userinit"  /t "REG_SZ" /d C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,"\"C:\Program Files\IAM Cloud\Cloud Drive Mapper\Cloud Drive                         Mapper.exe"\",  /f 


Results should be key value = C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,"C:\Program Files\IAM Cloud\Cloud Drive Mapper\Cloud Drive Mapper.exe",

 

 

 

    3. Create a registry key in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IAM Cloud\CloudDriveMapper called “LoadPreDesktopUserInit” with the original value from point 1. Normally >  C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe



Cloud Drive Mapper will now be loaded very early. Once the drive is correctly mapped it will continue to load the original Userinit value meaning that when the desktop loads it will have correctly mapped and applied any configuration – similar to folder redirection.


Please note however – modifying this key may have an impact on other services such as VMWare Agent. It might be you need to find an alternative method of booting up in such scenarios.
